Overview
PortalRider was an early exploration into physics-based movement mechanics and portal rendering in Godot. While the project is now archived, it served as a foundational learning experience for understanding:
- Character momentum and velocity preservation
- Portals and spatial transformation
- Level design for speedrunning
- 8 Kinds of Fun game design framework application
Tech Stack
- Godot 3.x (migrated knowledge to Godot 4.x for SpiceX)
- Custom physics β momentum-based movement system
- Portal rendering β camera duplication and view frustum tricks
Key Lessons Learned
- Physics feel matters more than graphics β a satisfying jump arc beats a pretty model
- Level design for flow β every section should have a βspeedrunning lineβ
- Portal edge cases β infinite loops, velocity clipping, collision nightmares
- Game feel (βjuiceβ) β screen shake, particle bursts, audio feedback on every action
